about

Before you ask, "The OED lists "irresistable" as a variant spelling used in the 17th and 18th centuries. Though would not recommend using it today, but who knows? It might make a comeback. "Resistable", on the other hand, has been used continuously since the 16th century, and can still be found today, although "resistible" is preferred. This is an area of where English spelling is pretty chaotic: "where there is a verb in French and English, as well as in Latin, English usage is distracted by conflicting and irreconcileable analogies" (OED, s.v. -ble). In this particular case, the fact that (medieval) Latin and (modern) French both have -ible seems to override the fact that -able is the only really productive form of the suffix in English" We like variants.....and it's in 'Little Women', so there!
